Lignopura Agrotech Pvt. Ltd. is a start-up formed in 2016 by a group of entrepreneurs, who are alumni of renowned institutions in India, such as IITs, ICT and NCL. I have personally known some members of the group, who got their doctoral degrees from IIT Bombay. With their diverse academic training and industrial experience, the group members are equipped with the expertise required for the development of processes and products, starting from ideation all the way to commercial production.

About a year and a half ago, this group started interacting with me on some innovative and sustainable technologies they have been working on for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to high value products. Such wastes present a disposal issue to civic administrations, and hence deriving values from them would accomplish two objectives in one shot. I found the development carried out by the team highly interesting, novel and above all, soundly based in the principles of sustainability. Employing their own resources and in their own time, the group has carried out the development of these technologies to a proof-of-concept stage, and samples of the products they have produced
look to be extremely interesting for several applications. In getting to this stage, the group has successfully overcome several technological challenges, and now have a process that is techno-economically feasible. The process developed successfully separates the components of lignocellulosic agro-waste, such as Cellulose, Sulfur free Lignin and Hemicellulose liquor, in suciently pure form.

I am convinced of the technical, commercial and social benefits of the technology, which the company has patented. The products from the process have a potential for further value addition, and would be of interest to diverse industries such as paper, cellulosic fibre, ethanol, specialty chemicals, bio-materials, pharmaceutical, etc. It thus
appears to me that the technology has the potential to change the perception of agricultural waste, and its utilisation. It is sincerely hoped that Lignopura will be successful in tying up with an Industrial partner to develop this technology to commercial scale for its full exploitation, I wish Lignopura all the very best in their endeavours.
